A cardboard box transformed into a knitting tool won first prize in Marel‘s ideas competition for secondary schools in Iceland at an award ceremony in the Paradise cinema in Reykjavik on Thursday, 18 November. The competition, named “Marel’s Brilliant Solution”, is part of the programme of activities in Iceland for Global Entrepreneurship Week, 15-21 November 2010.
Jon Gnarr, Mayor of Reykjavik, awarded the prizes for the winning entry, as well as for the best video and most original idea. (The entries are submitted in the form of a video.)
Marel’s Brilliant Solution is an ideas competition based on creating as much value from a simple object. In last year’s competition, participants were asked to increase the value of a coat hanger. This year, it was a cardboard box. The 2010 winners are:
Brilliant Solution 2010
Best Video: Multi-purpose picnic basket
Most original idea: Sandpaper
The purpose of the competition is to inspire participants to “think outside the box” and to look at things from a new point of view. More often than not, this is the best way to come up with new and creative ideas, which secondary school students seem to have in full supply.
Marel’s Brilliant Solution is organized by the Innovit center for entrepreneurship and innovation, and sponsored by Marel.
