Danish poultry giant Rose Poultry is setting the stakes high and investing in a new deboning unit at their Vinderup slaughterhouse. The project was developed by industry specialists from Marel, Stork and Marel’s daughter company Carnitech A/S in co-operation with the customer. The turn-key solution will include total-processing lines for breast caps and deboning, grading and packing of fillets.

Rose Poultry's logistics manager, Thomas Löth and Marel Scandinavia's direktor Bjarne Rask Nielsen sign the contract.
High quality requirements
Rose Poultry’s logistics manager, Thomas Löth, has this to say about the new investment: “When it comes to quality, the customers we work with are the most demanding in Europe. Requirements are increasing, and if Rose Poultry is to remain competitive, we must upgrade to highly automated production of breast fillets. Designing the four new deboning lines has been a long process in which customers, outside consultants and staff have all been involved. The new deboning lines have been approved by both Danish and British supermarket chains, and the staff have taken an active role in planning the individual work stations in terms of ergonomics and safety.”
Continuous production flow
The specifications include, among other things, requirements for strict hygiene, easy?to?clean design, rational and fully automated production flow, complete traceability and a totally integrated software system for on-line control of production. For bacteriological, temperature and control reasons, Rose Poultry has attached particular importance to everything being on-line in a continuous flow, from when the breast parts are cut down from the handling chain to ageing, filleting, calibration, and packing.
Experience with Marel
Last year, Rose Poultry installed an almost identical Marel deboning line at their poultry slaughterhouse in Skovsgaard, and based on this experience Rose Poultry started further collaboration with Marel and Carnitech. “Our acquaintance with Marel started with the installation in Skovsgaard,” says Thomas Löth. “We quickly sensed that Marel and Carnitech had exceptionally close collaboration, which had a highly positive effect on our collaboration with the two companies. For example, generally speaking there are always problems in the start-up phase of new equipment, but this time we found that both Marel and Carnitech recognized the problems and perseveringly continued their work until the plant was running to our complete satisfaction.”
Choice of contractor
Thomas Löth explains the reasons for their choice of contractor: “The collaboration with Marel went incredibly well, and both Marel Scandinavia and Carnitech handled the negotiation phase very professionally. They came up with good, constructive solutions, and at the same time they were very open to our suggestions. In making the final choice, account was taken of the fact that Marel and Stork could offer us a turnkey project. In addition, Marel has a unique, fully developed and completely integrated software control system that is already being used by several of the world’s leading poultry slaughterhouses.
“The software and expertise that Marel has in the chicken sector made a big impression on us,” continued Thomas. “Another key point was that the whole project at the outset consists of standard solutions, which can be adapted to meet our specific needs. At present, for example, we are working together with Marel and Carnitech to improve the design of conveyors, crossovers, etc., ensuring that they are easy to clean and meet strict hygienic requirements. Finally, the project in Skovsgard also had some influence: when a supplier does a good, solid job, you don’t just forget about it.”
